What do I need to run TurnStar?

There is no special equipment to buy. TurnStar runs on ANY wifi device that is connected to the internet. This means computer, tablet and even your smartphone in a pinch.

What does it take to get up and running?

Drop us a line and we’ll get you on board. Once there’s a computer or tablet at the host stand, you can be up and running within 30 seconds - click login and enter your username and password.

What kind of training is involved?

TurnStar takes an average of 10-20 minutes to learn - it’s that simple. Our goal was to make the system as simple as the pen-and-paper list system used in most casual restaurants.

How is the system set up and managed by the restaurant?

Restaurant managers and owners are given password-protected access to an administration web site where they can control everything, including custom wait estimates, text messages, and visitor metrics and statistics. The hosts see the waiting list and a few simple options, giving most of the control to the restaurant manager.

How do you estimate the wait time for guests?

We seed restaurants with an average “per party” wait time, which is fully customizable by the restaurant. These times are broken down by party size. In the future, as the restaurant uses the TurnStar system more, it will learn to predict wait times using a variety of statistical analysis techniques.

What happens if the Internet connection is dropped?

If the Internet connection to the restaurant is lost, contact us immediately and we will work with you to move your list off line without interrupting your flow of service.

What if someone spills a drink on our TurnStar system or the system crashes?

The beauty of TurnStar is that it’s web-based, so your waiting list can be accessed from any computer. If your computer breaks, crashes, or runs away from home, you can log in from another machine, or even from a smartphone, so that you’re up and running in no time!

Why should I have a system send texts when I could text or call the customer myself?

Why waste valuable resources? The more guests that are on the list, the more calls the host will have to make. This takes away from the time host spends with your customers. TurnStar provides a one-click solution; one less host on-duty means less operating expense and a better experience for your patrons.

Will customers leave instead of going to the bar area?

Surveys <a href=http://blog.TurnStar.com/news/wait-no-more-restaurant-survey-results/>have shown</a> (need to put correct link to new blog) that as many as 60% of patrons have no interest in going to the bar. Families with children, groups of teens, and even many adults have no interest in purchasing alcohol, so why not give them the option to roam rather than taking up lobby or bar space? The guests who want to drink will still drink – we’ve never shown an appreciable decline in bar sales at any TurnStar restaurant. The key is to allow the rest of the patrons – likely the majority of the bunch – to have the freedom to leave the restaurant at will and return when their table is almost ready. This will speed up the seating process and table turn, and guests will love it. If you feel the bar is a large source of revenue, you can always put an offer or enticement in the initial text to draw customers to the bar area.

What happens if a guest doesn't have a mobile phone or doesn’t want to give out their number?

No problem! The host enters the party information normally, simply omitting the patron’s phone number. Then the guest is invited to wait in a less-crowded and more convenient wait area, and can check back in for an update. It’s just like many restaurants operate now!

Besides, guests who don’t own a mobile phone are rare and becoming rarer. With mobile phone ownership at 95+% nationwide, the odds are that a party of four is going to have at least one person with a mobile phone who is willing to give their number.

If I already have pagers, do I have to get rid of them?

No, but you might want to! You can keep the pager system and use it with TurnStar. Just enter the pager number for guests who would prefer to use one in the “Notes” section, and alert them via the paging system when their table is ready.

What happens to any names on the list at the end of the night?

The system automatically clears out any stale names on the active waiting list. It also archives any people on the Seated or No Show lists each night.

What if someone on the list doesn’t show up?

The host can easily mark a guest as a “No Show” if they have been alerted a few times and haven’t shown up. If the guest comes back after being marked as such, the host can easily move them back to the active waiting list, and seat them when a table becomes available. In the future, if a guest is marked as a “No Show” more than a few times, they will be warned that they are at risk of their number being blacklisted from using the system.
